Tsunami

*Inspired by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake that caused a tsunami in SE Asia, then updated for the earthquake in 2011 that caused a tsunami in Japan

My neighbor spotted you from her home
She rushes her children to roam
“Run away from the water!” she shouts with fear
In ten seconds, she and her children disappear

I’ve always thought you were extremely valuable to every creature
Sustaining life until you arrived premature
Your wrath has impaired
More than can be repaired

(Deep exhale) Swallowed up by the sea
Bodies drifting lifelessly
Since you imposed your might like an enormous beast
Dare I ask, “How was your feast?”

You took 286,000 lives and displaced 1.7 million (Dec. 26, 2004, Indonesia)
In 14 countries from South Asia to East Africa
The amounts from the island of Honshu, Japan (Mar. 11, 2011)
Is still undetermined

Breath Taker

*Inspired by the Sandy Hook shooting in 2012

School – the ray of sunshine
Big man entered at half after 9

Tut tut tut tut
Tut tut tut tut
Thud thud thud thud
Tut tut tut tut

Tut tut tut tut
Tut tut tut tut
Thud thud thud thud
2 pools and a trail of blood

21 children and 6 adults died
You killed your mother and committed suicide
Survivors jolt
Parents live in tumult

Big man, you’re not big
You’re a tiny, little twig

Coward! Coward! COWARD!
