We’re inching closer to the end. Here is the fifth of seven questions:
A long time ago, I took a bite out of a veggie burger from a school lunch and questioned its existence. Should sandwiches and burgers delineate to include vegetarian, vegan, and healthier ingredients, such as substituting bread buns for portobello mushrooms or lettuce?
Although I do not approve vegan and vegetarian options for myself, I’d say yes to the question. I’m someone who makes efforts to be inclusive, so I would allow healthier alternatives for this purpose. An acquaintance who has been a vegetarian for a long time mentioned that it’s really hard to find vegetarian and vegan restaurants and food. Additionally, I planned a gathering last year, and taking a different acquaintance’s vegan status into account, I asked every restaurant before reserving whether they had vegan dishes or alternatives other than salad. At least they were honest on the phone. On the day of the gathering, she asked me whether the salad dressing was vegan, I froze momentarily with my mouth agape behind my mask, and finally responded that “I don’t know” followed by, “I will find out.” That was one of many lessons I learned that day. It’s more cumbersome to be inclusive, but if the shoe were on the other foot, I’d want someone to make those accommodations for me. It’s also better for the environment and we prevent animals from being slaughtered.
