August 22, 2019 Flash Fiction Challenge

This week’s Flash Fiction Challenge comes from Carrot Ranch.

In 99 words (no more, no less) write a story about old world charm. It can be nostalgic or irreverent. You can invent an “old world,” return to migrant roots or recall ancient times. Go where the prompt leads you!

Notes before reading: Yangge is a type of Chinese folk dance that originated in the Song Dynasty. The most well-known troupe is Shenyun Performing Arts and they perform all over the world.

Keeping the beat

The villagers waited a month for the yangge dancers to come to their village. They prepared the stage and makeshift dressing rooms for these special guests.

Yangge Dancers

Drums, trumpets, and gongs set the mood.

The audience watched and listened intently as the dancers sung. The love story that blossomed between two young farmers. Then they leaped into the air as if they were flying, then landed gracefully as if they were on a cloud, a spectacular performance of martial arts.

As the performance concluded, villagers were invited to join the dancers and have a parade. A feast concluded the festivities.

Thanks for reading.

  1. I enjoyed this and the reminder that Carrot Ranch is a worldwide community. (I tend to be stuck in New England and its east to west narratives) We all have our awaited festivities such as the one you describe, and our celebrations of history and heritage.

    1. Thanks nightlake 🙂 Unfortunately, the images don’t justify what it’s like to see a live performance, so I hope to convey that it’s much more than the images.
